What is ANSI X12?

X12 is the message standard for EDI established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The ANSI originally designed the X12 standard to support North American businesses, but today more than 300,000 companies worldwide use the ANSI X12 EDI standards daily to facilitate their business transactions.

There are ANSI X12 EDI standards for electronic data exchange for, for example, electronic order placement, transport orders and e-invoicing. The current set of messages supports every facet of electronic business in the business-to-business segment. Dutch organizations that do business with American companies will have to use the ANSI X12 EDI standard.

The difference for users is the geographic location between the two EDI standards.
ANSI X12 is commonly used in the United States and North America.
EDIFACT is mainly used by companies in Europe and Asia.

While both standards are similar, and largely use the same message structure, ANSI X12 and EDIFACT both use different terminologies.

Outsourcing EDI with Managed EDI

How to integrate and implement EDI is still a challenge for many organizations.
At Copernicus we have a lot of experience with EDI. With Niklas, our own integration platform or Enterprise Service Bus, we design and implement all communication between different applications and systems ourselves.

For organizations where EDI is not yet a core competency, Copernicus also offers ‘EDI as a service’: Managed EDI, based on Niklas.
Managed EDI is available in a customized subscription form and suitable for both large and small organizations.

If you would like to know more about the possibilities of Managed EDI for your company, please feel free to contact us.
